5. LAURENCE ANYWAYS, directed by Xavier Dolan
Xavier Dolan is known for his aesthetically pleasing costume design and art direction, as well as his unique cinematography, his close-ups and his slow mo-s. This trailer has his signature all over it.
4. BRAVE, directed by Mark Andrews
Pixar's first film with a female protagonist, they definitely needed a trailer to redeem themselves of their unconscious misogyny. What they came up with was a social commentary in 2 minutes, 30 seconds of everything that is wrong about society's view of women. Nip it in the butt with those arrows, Pixar. Nip it in the butt.
3. MOONRISE KINGDOM, directed by Wes Anderson
His first film since 2009's Oscar nominated Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes Anderson promises us everything we hope for in his films: artistry, style, emotion and nostalgia in a way that few filmmakers can authentically do. Great editing, as well as amazing use of music by Françoise Hardy and Benjamin Britten make this trailer a delight to watch.
2. LES MISÉRABLES, directed by Tom Hooper
One of the most successful musicals of all time, this movie is riding under a lot of pressure to please theatre fans everywhere. The trailer must therefore boast of its Oscar winner director as well as its stellar cast. It does exactly that, and breaks our heart with the quiet, gut-wrenching version of "I Dreamed A Dream." One of the best edited trailers of the year.
1. THE MASTER, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
Director Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the best of his craft alive today. With only 6 movies under his belt and his work garnering 15 Academy award nominations in total, I think we can expect nothing less from The Master, a film about a religious cult that has already sparked controversy. The trailer is creepily numb, featuring a barely recognizable Joaquin Phoenix in the leading role. It leaves much to the imagination, and the best trailers know to not give anything away.
